NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2024: Reported demolished. 2012 - A native of Pennsylvania, Adam Shoemaker settled on the subject property in 1846. Parcel historically consisted of 240 acres and originally featured a Greek Revival style residence (an image of which is seen in the 1873 atlas map of Rock County). Adam and Rebecca had four children. Property ultimately split between sons Charles and William. Charles retained that portion which included the subject residence. His farm, known as the Crystal Springs Stock Farm, included land on both sides of US Hwy 14. Charles Shoemaker helped organize both the Northern Wisconsin Tobacco Pool and the Pure Milk Association. Charles' son, William W. Shoemaker, later owned and resided in the house prior to relocating to the City of Janesville in 1949. House is a well-preserved and locally distinct example of the Italianate style. The house is clad in cream brick and rests on a cut stone foundation. A two-story bay is located on the east elevation. The front elevation faces south. A two-story gabled wing projects from the north elevation; in turn, a smaller gabled wing projects from the first wing. A one-story porch is located on the west side of the rear wing.
