Its historic, first-floor storefront windows have also been removed and replaced with two, large, single-lights. The only character retained by this building is reflected in the bracketed cornice that crowns the false front. This structure is within the Evansville Historic District. An update photograph is included." - "Evansville (USGS Quadrangle, 7.5')", WisDOT ID #5977-00-05", Prepared by Heritage Research, Ltd (Vogel) (2008). "Built between 1899 and 1907, this structure now houses the Allen Creek Gallery. A State Historical Marker on the nearby bridge notes its dedication as the "CCC Veterans Memorial Bridge." From late July to November 1933 Company V-1680 of the Civilian Conservation Corps performed soil erosion work in the Evansville area, including the rip rapping of the creek walls in the immediate vicinity. Members of that CCC company were all WWI veterans." Evansville Historic Preservation Commission, Historic Evansville Walking Tour brochure, 2014. |
