| Additional Information: | Previously surveyed in 1977. This is a two-story former store building that, today, is a residential duplex. The rectangular building has a front gable plan. Under the eaves is a narrow frieze with returned eaves on the main or north elevation. The entire building is covered with vinyl siding and the windows of the second story have been significantly altered. Some windows have been changed in size and all the windows have been replaced with modern single-light sashes. A circa 1936 photograph of this building shows that the store's six-pane show windows are still intact. However, the central entry, which appears to have been slightly recessed, is now enclosed with double doors that are not recessed. A large modern shingled overhang spans the area between the first and second stories. The main entrance leads into the first floor apartment. At the southwest corner, there is an enclosed staircase, also covered with vinyl siding, that leads to the second story apartment (2004). According to local history sources, this store was probably built prior to 1853, when it was operated by future governor Louis P. Harvey. Harvey only operated the store until 1855, then there was a series of owners until it was acquired by the Weirick family in 1884. Charles Weirick operated the store until 1902, then Theodore Weirick acquired it, followed by his son Lee. James Haggart, who married into the Weirick family, acquired the store some time before 1936, and was operating it during that year. (McLenegan, p. 94). |
