One of the Ernest Flagg Stone Masonry Houses of Milwaukee County (listed on NRHP: 9/12/85). Ridge dormers are made for ventilation. This one and one half-story Flagg System house faces east. Its dimensions are 47 x 58 feet. There are limestone exterior walls. The entrance is in a one story octagonal tower with conical roof, linking a one story ell with the rest of the house. Window and door openings are asymmetrical. There is a composition gable roof, two pairs of ridge dormers, ten gable dormers, and two chimneys with distinctive round openings. The original garage is attached. The living room in the one story ell has a stone fireplace. Casement windows open inward over the tile sills. There is a long hallway beyond the vestibule opening into the living room at one end and dining room at the other and a powder room and stairs to the second floor in between. The living room has a rafter ceiling with tie beams. There is a partial basement. A laundry room is just two steps down from the kitchen. A cabnet is open to the luandry and to the powder room. The kitchen has been remodeled with pine paneling. There is a partial attic and storage space under the roof. The upstairs partitions are 1 3/4" thich. Neighboring houses are quite large. This house is architecturally significant because it is one of a group of stone masonry houses built by Arnnold F. Meyer & Company, Inc. accroding to the construction method of Ernest Flagg. It is also distinctive because its plan is very similar to that of the house on Glendale but in reverse. |
