Church cost $11,669.47. The First Baptist Church of Wauwatosa was constructed in 1888 as a replacement for the smaller First Baptist Church, which was eventually moved to Wauwatosa Cemetery for use as a chapel. The congregation grew and renamed their church the Underwood Memorial Baptist Church, after the influential and first Wauwatosa minister, in 1907. The Baptist congregation moved in 1953 to a new church located nearby at the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Wauwatosa Avenue. The church building remained empty for a few years when, in 1961, it was purchased by the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church. The new congregation renovated the church in 1979. |
