Additional Information: | 2001- "This Gabled Ell form Greek Revival Style house was originally a T-plan farmhouse and it has an asymmetrical main facade that faces south onto the STH 78/ Keller Rd. intersection and it was previously surveyed by the State Historical Society in 1977. Based on its design, this house was probably built between 1856 and 1870, at which time this land was owned by L. P. Swallow (1861) and Orin Young (1877), and it is now the only 19th century survivor of the original farmstead, the only other surviving agricultural outbuilding that has been associated with it being a twentieth century dairy barn building that is located just to the east of the house. When surveyed in 1977, this house had already been resided in wide gauge aluminum or steel clapboards but it was otherwise in largely original condition and it still retained its original south-facing inset entrance porch in the ell portion and some of its original or at least very early windows. Since then, however, all the original windows have been replaced with modern ones, the house has been resided in vinyl clapboards, and the front porch has now been covered over by a shed roof addition that has been added across the front (south-facing elevation) of the ell. In addition, all the original Greek Revival style elements such as the front-facing upright wing's pedimented gable end and the cornice returns on the other gable ends have been removed and the house no longer gives any evidence of its Greek Revival style past. Consequently, it is believed that this house no longer possess sufficient integrity to justify listing in the NRHP." -"STH 78- Prairie du Sac to Merrimac", WisDOT 5630-03-00, Prepared by Timothy F. Heggland (2001). |
