Additional Information: | 2001- "This two-story-tall side gabled Greek Revival Style house was originally a farmhouse and it has a symmetrical main facade that faces east onto STH 78 and it was previously surveyed by the State Historical Society in 1977. Based on its design, this house was probably built between 1856 and 1870, at which time this land was owned by G. P. Wiswall (1861 and 1877), and it is now the only 19th century survivor of the original farmstead, the only other surviving historic agricultural outbuilding that has been associated with it being an early twentieth century medium size, arched roof, wood clad building that is located just behind the house to the west. When surveyed in 1977, this house was in largely original condition, was clad in clapboards, and retained its original full-width, one-story open front porch, although all its original windows had by then been replaced with one-over-one-light double hung wood sash. Since then, the house has had some of its original south-facing window openings replaced with smaller ones filled with modern windows and a large one-story gable-roofed modern wing has been added across the rear of the house. This was the altered but still semi-intact state of the house when it was rephotographed for this survey in 2001. Since then, however, all the windows have been replaced with smaller modern ones, the house has been resided in vinyl clapboards, and the front porch has been modified by the addition of modern Queen Anne style decorative elements. Consequently, it is believed that this house no longer possess sufficient integrity to justify listing in the NRHP, nor is it likely to be adversely affected by this project." -"STH 78- Prairie du Sac to Merrimac", WisDOT 5630-03-00, Prepared by Timothy F. Heggland (2001). |
