| Additional Information: | 2023: Built in 1889, the two-story J. Hatz Building has a rectangular plan, flat roof, and cream brick cladding. The first story on the front (east) facade has an original wrought-iron storefront with decorative pilasters and a cornice with dentils. The storefront windows have been downsized with replacement sash and metal panels. The windows on the second story are one-over-one, double-hung and fixed with stone sills and lintels. The building features an elaborate cornice with brick corbeling and an inset panel with original owner and construction date inscribed, “J. Hatz, 1889.” The side (north and south) elevations have stepped rooflines and are devoid of windows. The main floor has been converted into a gym and any original finishes have been removed. 1997: "In 1889, Jacob Hatz opened this building as a mercantile store. It had a full basement, the upper floor was an opera house and public meeting place. An outside entrance still is in place which opens to a stairway with a ticket booth at the top. It was used for school plays, graduations, and church socials. it was here that a traveling theater group presented "Birth of a Nation" - complete with orchestra. In later years it was a grocery store, hardware store and youth center. Since 1972 it has been a flower shop." |
