Erected ca.1910, the one and one-half story house faces south and is oriented perpendicular to East Jefferson Street. The house possesses a slate-shingled cross gable form, a flared base, broad eaves with curvilinear exposed rafter tails and beams, and multi-paned casement windows. The house displays the influence of the Arts and Crafts/Craftsman styles in its stucco finish, multi-paned windows, shingle roof, projecting eaves and exposed rafters. The only apparent structural alteration is a one-story, rear addition." - "E Jefferson St, Worcester St to STH 23 (Winstead ST)", WisDOT ID #5916-00-01", Prepared by Rachel E Bankowitz (2012). 2017 - This house was constructed in 1921 for Samuel and Nina Marcus following a design by Chicago architect Morton L. Pereira. The Marcus family owned a department store in downtown Spring Green (today's Nina's Department Store) as well as three others in the Wisconsin River valley. The Samuel and Nina Marcus House was constructed in a Craftsman style that, in its stucco exterior, modest detailing, and multiple banks of multi-pane casement windows, is highly indicative of the Arts and Crafts movement from which the Craftsman style originated. The house is in very good condition and retains a high degree of overall integrity. In addition to its clear reference to Arts and Crafts design, the Marcus house also displays the wide eaves, shaped rafter ends, projecting gable beams, and tapered front corners that are defining features of Craftsman architecture. Pereira was a family friend who was known primarily for his firm's design of newspaper plants and similar industrial buildings. |
