Additional Information: | 2015- This large, brick, two-story building has a prominent cornice featuring square modillions and large brackets on the primary (north) and west elevations. A modern storefront wraps around to the first bay of the west elevation. Upper level window openings contain modern fenestration resting on limestone sills. A one-story, brick addition is found on the rear elevation. The subject building was constructed circa 1911. Although there is some discrepancy in its address listing in city directories, the earliest tenant appears to be the Schmidt-Blanke Company clothiers. They remained in the building into the 1920s and were followed by the Otto Blanke Clothing Company. A 1930 permit indicates the building's storefronts were to be altered and an addition built on the rear elevation. By 1932, the McLellan Stores Company department store occupied the building and remained at this location into the 1950s. In 1941, McLellan Stores spent approximately $23,000 to alter their store and offices. -"IH-94/USH 41/WIS 341 Survey," WisDOT ID #1080-27-01, Prepared by Heritage Research, Ltd. (McQuillen) (2015). HEAVY DENTICULATED CORNICE W/ BRACKETS [Date Cnst:CA] 1930 permit indicates the building's storefronts were to be altered and an addition built on the rear elevation. Previously surveyed in 1980, at that time it was West Allis Office Supply. Resurveyed in 2007, new photograph provided. The building is not cited in the 1910 directory, nor is it on the 1910 Sanborn Map. However, it is cited in the 1916 directory and lists Dr. Richard H. Johnson, dentist, Frank R. Wright, Physician, West Allis Commercial Club and a Masonic Hall on the 2nd Floor. **2020 - Resurveyed for I-94 project 1060-27-04. No significant changes apparent. |
