Additional Information: | As of 1980, the building housed West Allis Bar and Restaurant Supply. Previously surveyed in 1980 as WEST ALLIS BAR & RESTAURANT SUPPLY. Resurveyed in 2007, new photo provided. 2017 survey information: This two-story, brick-faced, Eclectic Period Revival-style commercial building with parapet front rises from a concrete foundation. The first floor includes a single storefront with a recessed entrance; the display windows and bulkhead have been replaced however, the transom and wood-and-glass door remains intact. An additional wood-and-glass door that includes an overhead transom is located along the west end of the first level and provides access to the second-floor living quarters. A modestly projecting stone cornice defines the first floor from the second, which carries four pair of double-hung sash windows. Each pair is topped with a header of soldier brick and underscored with a plain stone sill. Only the furthest east window pair includes a decorative, wrought iron balconet. Above the windows, the building’s parapet with stone coping encompasses decorative rectilinear brickwork. Due to the close proximity of the adjacent buildings, little can be seen of the side elevations; however, a few windows are apparent along the second floor of the building’s east elevation. This structure was built at an approximate cost of $12,000 by Jerry De Groot in 1924 to replace the previous building at that location. De Groot established his hardware store at this location by no later than 1910. After working briefly with a partner (Roesmer; circa 1913), he continued on his own through the 1920s, until it was taken over by his brother-in-law Richard Mundigler. In 1936, a permit was taken out to alter the building to include an additional apartment on the second floor. Mundigler continued to work out of first-floor space through at least 1950, when he is identified as working as a heating contractor. Today, the commercial space is used as the office of Whole House Insulation, while the upper floor continues to be utilized as apartments |
