It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. PAIRED BRACKETS UNDER EAVES. PHOTO OBSCURED BY TREES. 2023: The Spring Prairie United Methodist Church was constructed in 1860 and features Italianate details. It is a one-story frame structure with a rectangular plan, concrete foundation, and replacement vinyl siding. It has a front-gable roof clad in metal and the eaves are supported by decorative double brackets. An ocular stained-glass window is located in the gable end. The front (south) facade has a front-gable vestibule with similar decorative brackets. Concrete steps with a replacement wrought-iron railing and a wooden accessibility ramp lead to the main entrance. An octagonal tower with a square battlement roof line sits on the roof. The side elevations have paired stained-glass windows with one-over-one. A c.1960, one-story addition is on the rear (south) elevation with an entrance to the east side. In 1852 Methodists and Congregationalists in the Spring Prairie area joined congregations and raised money to build a church. WHPD records date the church to 1860, which is confirmed by a newspaper article from the Elkhorn Independent that reports the church was built in 1860 after community members raised $925 for its construction. The Congregationalists eventually left the church to form their own, but Methodist members continued to use the church, adding a Sunday school room and later a kitchen c.1960 to the rear of the building. The Methodist members continue to use the church to this day. |
