Mark F. Smith interviews Carl Thompson on September 22, 1981. Thompson discusses the organization and workings of Phil La Follette's office, Thomas Duncan, the Progressive Club at the University of Wisconsin, Thompson's role in the 1934 campaign, Progressive support in Stoughton, the 1937 split in the Progressive Party, the 1940 gubernatorial race, the dissolution of the Progressive Party in 1946 and the split among its members between the Democratic and Republican Parties, and the Progressive campaign style. Prominent figures mentioned include A. W. Zeratsky, Elizabeth Brandeis Raushenbush, Paul Raushenbush, William Evjue, Charles Holmberg, Norman and Analise Clapp, Harold Groves, Thomas Amlie, Bob La Follette, Glenn Roberts, William Rice, and Andy Biemiller. Carl Thompson ran several times for office, including for the US House of Representatives and Wisconsin governor, and became a member of the Wisconsin Assembly in 1959, where he remained until 1984. This interview is part of the Former Members of the Progressive Party Oral History Project.
