James Cavanaugh interviewed Carl Thompson on December 21, 1984. Thompson discusses his own background, his involvement with politics as a law student at the University of Wisconsin, the rise and fall of the Progressive Party, Phil and Bob La Follette's political associations, Thompson's own bids for Congress and for governor, the Democratic Organizing Committee, changes in the Democratic Party, and various political figures such as Bob Tehan, Robert Kastenmeier, Dan Hoan, Andy Biemiller, William Proxmire, and Henry Reuss. Thompson ran several times for office, including for the United States House of Representatives and Wisconsin Governor, and became a member of the Wisconsin Assembly in 1959, where he remained until 1984.
