O-wan-ich-koh

O-wan-ich-koh (also phoneticized Hoowanneka) or the Little Elk, a chief of the Ho-Chunk. This portrait depicts Little Elk as he appeared at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1825. Lewis' work at Prairie du Chien and other treaty signings in Wisconsin and elsewhere during the 1820s was published as part of the Aboriginal Portfolio.
