Milking the Cows

Image

Two men are sitting on stools milking cows in a barnyard within a log fence enclosure. Milking was usually done outside during the 19th century so in this case Dahl did not need to move people outside to take the picture. One man is standing on the right, another man is standing in the background on the left, and another man is standing in front of one of the barn doors with two horses. A split-level barn with a new basement is behind the men and cattle. A farmhouse is in the background on the left.
