A farm family posing in their living room. Sitting from left to right is John Dietrich (1874-1947), Grace Bowman (1879-1964), and Mrs. Lizzie Macke Dietrich (1880-1933). Standing behind them are Philip (b. 1880), George (b. 1883) and Julius (1885-1952) Nortman. Like others in Black River Falls, Dietrich was accused of pro-German sympathies during World War I. He was persecuted by being forced to ride on a log up and down Main Street, etc. On Armistice Day, 1918, a group went to his place in the country, put him in a truck, and made him kiss the United States flag. Caption from Classified File reads: "Farm family posing in living room. John Diedrich, Grace Bowman and Mrs. Diedrich (Lizzie Macke),--seated. Standing: Philip, George and Julius Nortmann. (Mrs.?) Rozmanoski (owner?) of the Pines Hotel is (Diedrich's) daughter. Like others in this community, Diedrich was accused of pro-German sympathies during the first World War and he was persecuted by being forced to ride a log up and down Main St., etc. On Armistice Day, 1918, a group went to his place out of town, got him in a truck and made him kiss the U.S. flag.
