Clemency for the Rosenbergs

Convicted spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg received a death sentence in 1951, not long after Joseph R. McCarthy burst into the headlines with his charges about Communist spies in the State Department. During their imprisonment the Rosenbergs received support from some individuals who felt that the prosecutor's evidence was unconvincing or that, even if the Rosenbergs were guilty, that the death sentence was not in accord with the punishment administered to other spies. Ultimately President Eisenhower dismissed their appeal and the Rosenbergs were executed in March 1953.
