Accompanying this sketch is Hölzlhuber's description of his last foray from Milwaukee before leaving America. "Before my return to Europe, D. Brandis, the editor of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Paper in New York, invited me in March 1860 to undertake another trip to the Upper Mississippi and to sketch for his paper the new towns such as La Crosse, St. Paul, St. Anthony, New Ulm, etc. Accordingly I went on April 14, 1860, from Milwaukee first to La Crosse on the Minnesota Railway, and I got there at about 10 o'clock in the evening when the steamer Union was ready for departure. Those who were not embarking on the steamer used the buses standing there in readiness to take us to the town of La Crosse, and we went through the sandy and dusty roads to the town, which was still fully illuminated, and we found accommodation at a hotel on Main Street.
