A Cultivated Farm of Michael Ranzer near New Ulm, Minnesota

Ranzer's prosperous farm was hewn out of the forest rather than the prairie. This was "of course more difficult" and needed hired help to fell and burn the trees in order to grow grain. When Hölzlhuber visited in 1859, Ranzer's hard years were behind him and "he had a nice brick house in the center of the old block cabins where he could rest in his old age." Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner.
