Carte-de-visite portrait of Joshua Hoopes (1788-1874), American Botanist. An infant at the time of the Wyoming Indian massacre, his mother strapped him on her back and fled on horseback to escape death at the hands of the American Indians. In 1834, he opened the "Hoopes Boarding School for Boys" in West Chester. where he was known for his lectures on astronomy and botany. A handwritten inscription at the bottom of the image reads, "Joshua Hoopes."
