Divers Testing New Breathing Mixture

Dr. Edgar End, Max Gene Nohl and John Craig (the "human guinea pigs") are shown inside the decompression chamber located at the Milwaukee County Emergency Hospital in Milwaukee. The year is probably 1936. The three individuals are testing Dr. End's helium-oxygen mixture that would prove to extend the time underwater and the depth that divers could reach. As a result of these experiments, along with new self-contained dive gear they devised, Max Nohl was able to set a record deep dive in Lake Michigan on December 1, 1937.
