Retreating Germans

Victor Morris took this photograph of German troops leaving Ham, a French village on the Somme, nine days after the armistice. In accompanying notes, Morris indicated that he watched the Germans move past him for over an hour, "some of the officers scaring me with dirty looks." He learned later that he was in Ham in violation of the terms of the armistice.
