"Legislation" Pendentive

"Legislation" pendentive, one of four panels of glass mosaic by Kenyon Cox, in the Wisconsin State Capitol. The artist sought the decorative properties of the Byzantine mosaics, while creating a style more in harmony with the purely Beaux-Arts character of the building. Located between the four arches in the rotunda, the pendentives make the transition from the octagonal form of the rotunda to the circular form of the dome. Each pendentive has a colossal seated figure on a gold background, which symbolize the three divisions of the powers of the state--the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. The last represents liberty, the foundation of all power in a free country.
