McCarthy at Inauguration
Image
Joseph R. McCarthy arriving at the inaugural ceremonies for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was unusual for McCarthy, who was very casual about his attire, to appear so well-dressed. McCarthy was then at the peak of his influence. With the Republican victory in November 1952, McCarthy became head of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Under his leadership, the function of the committee was broadened to encompass Communist espionage in the federal government.
