Lindbergh Returns, Madison

Image

Crowd greeting the "Spirit of St. Louis" when Charles Lindbergh flew to Madison on August 22, 1927. The crowd at Pennco Field (Royal Airport)was so large that Lindbergh himself cannot be seen here. The size of the Madison crowd is representative of the public adulation Lindbergh received after his trans-Atlantic flight. Madison was particularly excited because Lindbergh had been a student at the University of Wisconsin.
