Edward Alsworth Ross
Image
Three-quarter portrait of sociology professor Edward Alsworth Ross. Ross was the subject of Stanford University's first academic freedom controversy when anti-Japanese immigration statements he made led the Stanford family to call for his resignation. This led to spirited debate on the limits of free speech for university faculty. Ross later moved to Madison, where he taught sociology from 1905 until 1937.
