George Herbert Walker Bush, 41st President of the United States, with his wife, Barbara Pierce Bush. Bush was born on June 12, 1924 in Milton, Massachusetts. He was a Navy pilot, flying 58 combat missions during World War II. Later, Bush served two terms as a Representive from Texas in the U.S. Congress and then ran unsuccessfully for the Senate. Subsequently, he was appointed Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office to China, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Failing in his bid to win the Republican presidential nomination in 1980, Bush ran as Ronald Reagan's vice presidential candidate. They were elected. Bush won the Presidency in the 1988 election, but failed to win reelection in 1992.
