Waist-up oval studio portrait of Severt Peterson [as written on backing of photograph and published roster: Wisconsin Volunteers: War of the Rebellion (1914); also written as Siver Pederson on Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20 and as Sivert Peterson in published roster: Rosters of Wisconsin Volunteers, Volume 1 (1886); also as Syver Peterson in the Department of Veterans Affairs: Grave Site Locator] in uniform holding his musket against his shoulder. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Winneshick, Iowa. On January 11, 1862, he enlisted in Winneshick, Iowa and on February 11, 1862, he was mustered into service in Madison, Wisconsin at the age of 16. In October 1862, he was detached on Provost Marshal Duty. On September 20, 1863, he was listed as missing-in-action during the fighting near Chickamauga, Georgia. It was discovered that he was captured and imprisoned in Andersonville, Georgia where he died of scarbutus in September 5, 1864; grave No. 7893. On June 7, 1867, he received the brevetted rank of captain due to being a prisoner of war at Andersonville, Georgia.
