Quarter-length studio portrait of Johannes M. Johnson [as written on the photograph backing; also written and known as John M. Johnson on Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20, published rosters: Wisconsin Volunteers (1914) and Rosters of Wisconsin Volunteers, Volume 1 (1886)], a captain in Company A, 15th Wisconsin Infantry, in uniform. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Madison, Wisconsin. On December 9, 1861, he was commissioned as first lieutenant of Company E, 15th Wisconsin Infantry by the governor of Wisconsin and was mustered into service in Madison, Wisconsin at age 28. On October 20, 1863, he was promoted to Captain of Company A, 15th Wisconsin Infantry. He was killed in action on September 19, 1863, during the battle at Chickamauga, Georgia.
