Madison City Gas, Light and Coke Company

Image

Eight men, including a police officer, pose in front of the Madison City Gas, Light and Coke Company building at 126 E. Main Street. The five men on the left appear to be office workers; the two men at far right are wearing overalls. The man in his shirtsleeves, third from the left, is John H. Corscot (1839-1926), the company's secretary and treasurer.

In 1896 a New York utility syndicate bought the Madison City Gas Light and Coke Co. and Four Lakes Light and Power Co. and merged them into a new company, Madison Gas and Electric Co., headquartered at the MCGL&C offices at 126 E. Main St.
