Text attached to a print made from the negative reads, "This photo of me with a Papuan native carrier was made near Buna early in January. This fellow with his shorts is a bit overdressed. Most of the carriers wear only g-strings. Object in my hand is a flat tin needed to keep cigarets [sic] dry in moist climate. Please paint out cartridge clip holder on my belt under my left hand if you use the picture. (Carrying of arms by correspondents is prohibited.) I am wearing green jungle suit. Wrist watch worn on lapel to prevent sweating out strap." The photo and caption were passed by the censors. However, on the reverse it reads, "(Return w questions)." The image was taken after the Allies captured Buna, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). The jungle is in the background.
