Jarius Fairchild House

Early view of the house built by Madison's first mayor, Jairus C. Fairchild, at 302 South Wisconsin Avenue (renamed Monona Avenue in 1877) at West Wilson St. near Lake Monona. There is a woman standing near the front door. The house was constructed in 1850 and later was substantially altered with additions. After the Civil War, the house became the home of Fairchild's son, Lucius, Civil War hero, Wisconsin governor (1866-72) and foreign diplomat. During his six years as governor, the Fairchild House was the state's executive residence, as no such property was then owned by the state. The residence was therefore a focus of Madison's political and social life during the last half of the 19th century.
