Carte-de-visite featuring a full-length hand-drawn portrait of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, F & S, 11th New York Infantry in full Union uniform, leaning on his sword. He was born in Malta, New York, but moved to Chicago, where he worked as a law clerk. He was also close to President Lincoln and his family. He was killed on May 24, 1861 in Alexandria, Virginia, while he and a few others went to remove a Confederate flag. He was succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel Farnham.
