Head and shoulders studio portrait of Lewis G. Nelson, a captain in Company D, 15th Wisconsin Infantry, in uniform. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. On October 30, 1861, he enlisted as a private and mustered into service on February 13, 1862, in Madison, Wisconsin at age 20. He was named commissary sergeant on January 1, 1862. He was promoted to first lieutenant on April 30, 1862. From November 24, 1863, until April 11, 1862, he served as acting regimental quarter master. On May 02, 1862, he was appointed to adjutant. In august 1864, he rejoined Company D and was appointed Captain. He mustered out with the company on August 31, 1865.
