Ben Hur and Iras in a Poster for "Ben Hur"

The image shows the two lovers sitting on a a couch clasping one another and looking deeply into one another's eyes, with the Nile in the background. The caption at bottom quotes from the play "'Thy lips are like a Thread of Scarlet. I love thee.' Ben-Hur Act IV."" This version of the eternally-popular melodramatic spectacle (adapted from Lew Wallace's novel by William Young, with music by Edgar Stillman Kelley) was revived several times between 1899 and 1916.
