Evjue and Capital Times Staff

William T. Evjue (seated on the desk), editor and publisher of the Madison Capital Times, with members of his staff. Evjue was well-known for his journalistic crusades, perhaps most notable being his opposition to Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Even before McCarthy became a national figure after his February 1950 speech at Wheeling, West Virginia, the Capital Times experienced one of the senator's anti-communist attacks. McCarthy charged that city editor Cedric Parker was a Communist and that the Capital Times was the Communist Party mouthpiece in Wisconsin. Identified newspapermen in this photograph taken at the Capital Times office are John Sammis and Frank Custer (on the left) and Havens Wilbur and Harry D. Sage to Evjue's left.
