Bridge and Harbor

Image

Postcard with two images. The top text reads: "Interstate Bridge, connecting Superior, Wis. and Duluth, Minn." The bottom text reads: "Superior Entry and Ship Canal." Elevated view of a ship steaming towards the bridge. The Interstate Bridge was opened in July 1897. After the new "High Bridge" was opened in 1961, traffic dwindled and the swing span was locked open. It was mostly removed in the 1970s. The Superior Entry was first charted in 1861. The U.S. Corps of engineers completed the present 1500 to 2000 foot long concrete piers in 1909. The image shows a cargo ship in the canal.
