Carte-de-visite portrait of Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864), notable American professor of science. He served for many years as a professor of Chemistry and Natural History at Yale University. Accomplishments to his credit include publishing the first scientific account of the chemical composition of a meteorite, discovering the component elements in many mineral compounds, and founding and editing the American Journal of Science. He is shown here sitting in three-quarter profile. Handwritten inscription at bottom reads, "B. Silliman 1865."
