Steam Boat Springs in Idaho; sketched by Wilkins on his 151-day journey from Missouri to California on the Overland Trail (also known as the Oregon Trail). Wilkins writes in his diary on August 3rd: "But the greatest curiosity was what is called the steam boat spring...close to the banks of the river. rising from a hole in the rock, the gass rises thro' this with such fury, as to make the water rise sometimes 4 or 5 ft high....the gas (carbonic acid gass) hisses like steam from a boiler, hence the name- -"
