Apollo 16 Before Launch

The Apollo 16 flight crew and backup crew at the breakfast served four hours before launch. With them, seated on the right side of the table and pointing, is Donald K. Slayton of Sparta, Wisconsin, the chief of the flight crew operations. Left to right around the table are: Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot Charles M Duke, Stuart Roosa, command module pilot Thomas Mattingly (partially shown), David Pallard, Charles Buckley, Slayton, and mission commander John Young. Slayton was selected as one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, but he was grounded because of an irregular heart beat. Slayton then became director of flight crew operations. In 1972 a healthy Slayton was restored to flight status, and in 1975 he flew on the nine-day Apollo-Soyuz mission. This photograph is part of the NASA press material collected by ABC science reporter Jules Bergman. His papers are available for research at the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives.
