Quarter-length portrait of George V. Allen, a Duke University alumnus and United States ambassador to Iran (1946-1948), Yugoslavia (1949-1953), India and Nepal (1953-1954), and Greece (1956-1957). He was also Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs (1948-1949), Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affairs (1953-1954), Director of the U.S. Information Agency (1957-1960), and president of the Tobacco Institute (1960-1966).
