Black Hawk War Map

The Black Hawk War was fought in 1832 when Sauk Indians, led by Chief Black Hawk, crossed the Mississippi, hoping to resettle in their Illinois homeland. After being met by Illinois militia and U.S. Army troops, the Sauks avoided capture for several months by leading the American troops through northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. At the end of the four-month-long war, only about 150 of of the original band of 1,200 Sauks survived. This map shows selected battle sites and military forts in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, as well as the route taken by Black Hawk and his band. Some cities are marked with a letter: Milwaukee (M), Chicago (C), and Prairie du Chien (P).
