In 1849, northern Wisconsin was composed of huge sectional regions such as Chippewa, Portage, Brown and Crawford, whereas southern Wisconsin was constituted by the counties we know today. This 1849 map shows the sectional and county makeup of Wisconsin the year after it became a state.
