In 1916, it was estimated that 15,000 Indian mounds had formerly existed in Wisconsin. In the early 20th century, the Wisconsin Archaeological Society surveyed every section of the state to account for the mounds. This 1916 map shows the "boundaries of the Effigy Mound Region in Wisconsin", the majority of which were in the southern half of the state. The map shows the location of conical mounds, groups of conical mounds, effigy mounds, and groups of effigy/other mounds.
