The Garver Feed and Supply Company Complex, located at 3244 Atwood Avenue in Madison on a 19-acre site, was originally constructed in the Romanesque Revival style. The main factory building and adjacent office building were remodeled in 1929-1931 by architects Law, Law, and Potter.
The complex was originally constructed by the United States Sugar Beet Company as a sugar beet refining plant; a small but important subset of the agricultural economy in Wisconsin during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. In 1929, the site was purchased by agricultural entrepreneur James R. Garver and was substantially remodeled to serve as a commercial feed mill.
The Garver Feed and Supply Company focused on the maturation of a scientific, research-based, and centralized approach to the production of livestock feed during a time of increased commercialization of the farming industry. The Garver Feed and Supply Company Complex serves as an important surviving link to the agricultural industry in the Madison area and the upper Midwest and is the best remaining example of a pre-World War II livestock feed manufacturing plant in the city.
