The Charles T. and Gertrude Rietz House was constructed in Silver Creek, Wisconsin, c.1903. This coincided with Charles taking over daily operations of the Rietz Distillery. The successful distillery was established by his father, Theodore Reitz, as early as 1862 along the bank of Silver Creek. Charles and Gertrude retained the Milwaukee-based architectural firm of Leenhouts and Guthrie to design the prominent home, which was situated just northeast of the distillery complex.
As a whole, the residence’s design reflects the differing ideologies attributed to home design during the early 1900s, ranging from ornate decorative embellishments and formal floorplans to the emphasis on the relationship between form and function and the natural environment. As a blend of the Queen Anne Free Classic and Craftsman styles, the Rietz House reflects the dichotomy of popular early-twentieth-century architecture.
