Built as the founding motherhouse and teacher training academy for their religious order, the Sisters of St. Joseph Complex is significant in the areas of Education and Ethnic Heritage. The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis (SSJ-SOSJ) order is recognized as the largest Polish sisterhood established in the United States. They staffed numerous Polish parochial schools during the period of significant Polish immigration. SOSJ advanced the academic and vocational training of their members through their administration of St. Joseph Academy and St. Joseph Junior College within the convent. Additional classes were provided when the community gathered during the summer months. Specific to the ethnic heritage of the order, the Sisters of St. Joseph offered courses in Polish conversation, composition, and literature. Their background and training allowed the sisters to reinforce and sustain the Polish identity and cultural traditions of the parochial schoolchildren they educated in the Polish immigrant communities they served, while also integrating them into the broader culture of the United States.
