Date of Construction: 1915
Constructed in 1915 in the city of River Falls, the Jay and Bernice Grimm House is a fine – and relatively rare – example of a Craftsman style airplane bungalow. As a representative of the airplane bungalow form, the house exbibits a compact bungalow plan with a diminutive upper half story that contains a sleeping porch and windows in each elevation. Its Craftsman style is exemplified by its low-pitched gable and hipped roofs with widely overhanging eaves and exposed rafter ends, its dominant front porch with heavy masonry piers and battered wood columns, its decorative half-timbering under the gables, its strategic placement of decorative leaded-glass and art-glass windows, and its extensive interior woodwork and built-in fixtures. This combination of form and stylistic features renders the house an excellent example of an early twentieth-century Craftsman style airplane bungalow.
Jay and Bernice Grimm lived in the house for over forty years; during this time, Jay Grimm served as a River-Falls-based attorney and later, as Pierce County judge. Grimm also served on the State Normal School Board of Regents (forerunner of today’s UW River Falls) for over thirteen years.
