The materials for the construction of the barn came from the immediate area. The stone was quarried from the nearby hill and the lumber came from the farm. It was milled in North Freedom. The Lusby brothers laid the foundation for the barn. The siding was applied to the barn horizontally, rather than the more standard vertical application. The barn was covered with siding in 1995. Other agricultural buildings a the Shale farm include a milk house, corn crib, chicken coop, and storage sheds. A 'site file' (John & Isabel Shale Farmstead) exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation.
